Refine for your car

The value above is the trim’s typical example. Tell us the exact year, mileage and condition to position your car within the band.

Data-plate / trim-tag codes optional · decodes onto your report

Positioned from the documented band by model year, mileage and condition. Value is indicative, not an appraisal. Transmission isn’t a factor yet — the band covers manual and automatic together while we split those where the market separates them.

Chassis number reference

Reference for reading a BMW chassis or type number — not proof of identity. A number falling inside a listed range does not confirm which model a car is. Most of this comes from marque clubs and factory material, so each line carries the confidence of its source.

Pre-1981 BMW chassis numbers are model/variant number blocks (5, 6, then 7 digits), not a positional VIN; the block identifies model, body, transmission, steering side and market. Find the model, then the block. The factory-original engine is stamped with the same 7-digit number.

Structure
Engine matches chassismedium confidenceFactory engines (02 series and later 7-digit era) are stamped with the car's 7-digit chassis number on a machined boss at the left rear of the block above the starter, between "+" signs. Exchange engines carry a type code plus "A".
Chassis stamp locationsmedium confidenceE9: heater bulkhead in the engine bay, ring around the starter motor, factory plate in the engine bay; US cars also on the steering-column cover.
Birth certificate fieldsmedium confidenceBMW Group Classic digital birth certificate contains chassis, engine and transmission numbers plus production and delivery dates (ordered separately; replaces the former vehicle certificate).
